[Phase 1] Telangana Sheep Distribution Scheme 2020-2021 for Shepherds / Sheep Producers Societies

Sheep Distribution Scheme Phase 1 is going to be resumed by the Telangana government from 16 January 2021. CM K Chandrashekhar Rao has given instructions to officials to resume first phase of Telangana Sheep Distribution Scheme 2020-2021. This 1st phase implementation of sheep distribution programme was put on hold due to Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the state. CM has instructed officials to complete it immediately and so distribution of sheeps to shepherds and sheep producers societies will start at Nalgonda.

Telangana Sheep Distribution Scheme 2020-2021

The state govt. of Telangana will start Sheep Distribution Scheme 2020-2021 for shepherds and sheep producer societies. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, 1st phase of sheep distribution was put on hold which is now going to be restarted and completed. In this article, we will tell you about the implementation details of Telangana Sheep Distribution Programme Phase 1 and Phase 2.

Sheep Distribution Scheme Phase 1

As we have told you earlier that the Sheep Distribution Scheme Phase 1 will start at Nalgonda from 16 Jan 2021. CM KCR has even decided to start the second phase of the programme from the upcoming financial year 2022. Telangana govt. has announced that funds for the Sheep Distribution Program Phase 2 would be allocated in the state budget in March 2021. The distribution of sheeps to shepherds and sheep producer societies in Phase 1 will begin immediately.

75% Subsidy to Beneficiaries of Telangana Sheep Distribution Programme

In the sheep distribution programme, Telangana govt. will provide 75% subsidy to beneficiaries among the Golla-Kuruma community. Ever since the first phase of programme was deferred during the last stage due to the Corona pandemic. Telangana Sheep Distribution Scheme has empowered the community both socially and economically.

Number of Beneficiaries of Sheep Distribution Programme

There are about 7.61 lakh shepherds as members in around 8,109 sheep producers societies across the State. The State government launched the sheep distribution scheme with an expenditure of Rs 10,000 crore to empower them both financially and socially. Around 3.66 lakh units of sheep were distributed since the launch of Telangana Sheep Distribution Scheme in 2017, at an expenditure of Rs 4,579 crore. As a result, the sheep population increased as shown in the data below:-

The accumulated total of 1.37 lakh sheep are estimated to be worth around Rs. 6,169 crore.

Launch of Telangana Sheep Distribution Scheme 1st Phase by CM KCR

Chief Minister KCR will launch the Telangana Sheep Distribution Scheme 1st Phase at a formal event at Nalgonda on January 16. Around 28,335 applicants have already drawn necessary demand drafts. These applicants would receive the sheep units worth total Rs. 360 crore. The state government is committed to provide sheep to each and every eligible family of the Golla-Kuruma community. About Rs 4,210 crore will be set aside for the purpose in the upcoming State Budget.

History of Sheep Distribution in Telangana

The scheme was launched on 20 June 2017 by the Chief Minister of Telangana, K. Chandrashekhar Rao. Of the Rs. 1.25 lakhs cost per unit, the government provides 75% of the cost and 25% is borne by the beneficiary. The sheep population in Telangana is expected to multiply to four times in two years.

The scheme was started to strengthen the rural economy through empowerment of Golla and Kurma communities in their traditional occupations. It is implemented by Telangana State Sheep and Goat Development Cooperative Federation (TSSGDCF). The sheep are purchased from other states, in order to avoid recycling and increase the net population in the state. The sheep breeds chosen are Nellore Brown (Dora), Nellore Jodipi (white with black spots on face), Deccani and Madras Red.

Eligibility Criteria for Sheep Distribution Scheme in Telangana

It is launched to support the traditional shepherd community, the Kurumas and Yadavas in Telangana. Every person aged above 18 years from shepherd community eligible for the scheme and is given a unit of sheet, which has 20 sheep and a ram.

By March 2018, 1 crore 28 lakh sheep were distributed, to over two lakh members of 7.61 lakh eligible persons submitted their applications for the sheep units.

Mobile veterinary units

The government started mobile veterinary units to attend to sickness and treatment of animals for the scheme. The toll free number is 1962.

Insurance to Shepherd Farmer

The shepherd farmer receives insurance in case of a death by the government. Rs. 5,000 for a sheep and Rs. 7,000 for a ram.

Fodder

For providing fodder the government is giving 75% subsidy on grass seeds.
