Scheme for Higher Education Youth in Apprenticeship and Skills (SHREYAS) – Complete Details

Central govt. has launched Scheme for Higher Education Youth in Apprenticeship and Skills (SHREYAS) for youths. Under this Shreyas Scheme, the govt. is going to provide industry apprenticeship opportunities to youth and will enable them to get gainful employment and contribute to country’s progress. These opportunities would be applicable to general graduates who have taken exit in April 2021 through National Apprenticeship Promotional Scheme (NAPS).

The main objective of SHREYAS Scheme is to enhance the employability of Indian youth by providing on the job work exposure and earning of stipend. This is a major effort to make degree students more skilled, capable, employable and aligned to needs of economy.

This programme is primarily for students in degree courses mainly non-technical with a view to introduce employable skills into their learning, promote apprenticeship as an integral to education. Moreover, employment facilitating efforts of govt. to be integrated in the education system to provide jobs to candidates after graduation.

SHREYAS Scheme 2021 Launched by Central Govt.

SHREYAS programme comprises of initiatives of 3 ministries namely Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Ministry of Labour & Employment, Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship. This would be done through National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS), National Career Service (NCS)and introduction of B.A / B.Sc / B.Com (Professional) courses in the higher educational institutions.

SHREYAS Portal

The Shreyas portal will enable educational institutions and industry to make login and provide their respective demand and supply of apprenticeship. Students matching with apprenticeship avenues is going to be done as per the eligibility criteria. The main focus is that all the general degree students who have passed out in April 2021 will get opportunity of industry and service sector apprenticeship.

Furthermore, the SSCs has already identified over 100 NSQF aligned job roles and courses in IT / Retail / Logistics / Tourism / Healthcare / BFSI / Electronics / Media / Life Sciences & Management in which the exiting graduates can take under Apprenticeship program. All of these courses remain available from April-May 2021. Around 40 higher educational institutions are already been tied up in order to take up embedded apprenticeship courses. MHRD and MSD&E has also launched 7 degree apprenticeship curriculum which includes BBA & BVOC courses. There are 6 sector skill councils of IT, Retail, Logistics, Tourism, BFSI, Food Processing which have taken the lead.

Objectives of SHREYAS Scheme

  • Improving the employability of students with introduction of employment relevance in the learning process of higher education system.
  • To create a functional link between education and industry / service sectors on a sustainable basis.
  • In order to provide skills to the students which are in high demand in a dynamic manner.
  • In order to establish an earn while you learn system in higher education.
  • To help business / industry to secure good quality manpower.
  • To link student community with the employment creation efforts of the central government.

SHREYAS scheme is going to be operation along with the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) to ensure apprentices placement upto 10% of total workforce in each business. Sector Skill Council (SSCs) will implement the Shreyas Scheme 2021. This scheme will include Baking Finance Insurance Service (BFSI), Retail, Health Care, Telecom, Logistics, Media, Management Services, ITeS and Apparel sectors.

SHREYAS Scheme Implementation – 3 Tracks

The SHREYAS programme is going to witness simultaneous implementation along 3 tracks:-

  1. 1st Track – Add-on apprenticeship (Degree apprenticeship)
  2. 2nd track – Embedded Apprenticeship
  3. 3rd Track – Linking National Career Service with Colleges

SSCs have already identified over 100 areas where apprenticeship opportunities are going to be provided. SSCs along with colleges concerned in assistance with their placement cells will identify the industries where students will get apprenticeships opportunities.
