Maharashtra govt. to implement Mukta Scheme to release women prisoners who have been in jail for years and have not been able to pay their bail amounts and fulfill other legal requirements. This scheme will find out women who are in various jails and are unnecessarily harassed and those who can be released by fulfilling the legal requirements. What is Maharashtra Mukta Scheme 2021
Maharashtra Mukta Scheme aims to bring relief to the women prisoners who have been languishing in jails for minor crimes. After the successful implementation of Mukta Yojana, burden on prisons would also get reduced. This scheme is essential because cases pertaining to minor issues had been registered against a number of women and they were in custody since many years for want of bail. So to release such women on bail, CM Uddhav Thackeray led state government is planning to launch Mukta Scheme.
Need for Mukta Scheme in Maharashtra
The new initiative namely Maharashtra Mukta Scheme will be beneficial for women who are in custody despite bail orders, as they are not able to pay the release amount. For eg – a woman working in a private firm was detained by police for nearly two years over a minor issue and subsequently her family and children went through trauma. There are several examples of women who are in custody for minor reasons. So to help such women and release them from prison, govt. will start Mukta Yojana.
Implementation of Mukta Yojana
Mukta scheme will be implemented in various jails of the state to find out women who have been unnecessarily harassed and those who can be released by fulfilling the legal requirements. A state govt. minister will visit the jails and collect information regarding such women prisoners. The state govt. will also take help of the Maharashtra legal aid services authority.
Steps will also be taken to reduce the bail amounts and the help of NGOs and other organisations will be sought to pay it for the release of women prisoners. If these women have no shelter, arrangements will be made to accommodate them under a government scheme for destitute women.
