PM Gram Sadak Yojana Phase 3 – Govt. Approves Rural Road Programme 3rd Phase Launch

The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), was launched by the Govt. of India to provide connectivity to unconnected Habitations as part of a poverty reduction strategy. Govt. of India is endeavoring to set high and uniform technical and management standards and facilitating policy development and planning at State level in order to ensure sustainable management of the rural roads network.

According to latest figures made available by the State Governments under a survey to identify Core Network as part of the PMGSY programme, about 1.67 lakh Unconnected Habitations are eligible for coverage under the programme. This involves construction of about 3.71 lakh km. of roads for New Connectivity and 3.68 lakh km. under upgradation.

PM Gram Sadak Yojana Phase 3 Launch

Central govt. has approved the launch of Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana Phase 3 which is the flagship rural road programme. This PMGSY 3rd phase is approved in the cabinet committee meeting led by PM Narendra Modi. PM Gram Sadak Yojna 3rd Phase will boost connectivity of villages with hospitals, schools and markets. The Union govt. of India will revamp 1.25 km of roads in the country.

The 1.25 lakh km of rural roads under PM Gram Sadak Yojana Phase 3 will be further consolidated by building new link roads, revamping and widening existing roads. The duration of this PMGSY 3rd Phase will be of 5 years i.e 2024-25. Around 97% of all the eligible and feasible habitations have already been connected by all-weather roads under PMGSY scheme.

Govt. Approves Rural Road Programme 3rd Phase Launch

The cabinet committee of economic affairs (CCEA) headed by PM Narendra Modi has approved the launch of PM Gram Sadak Yojana Phase 3. This PMGSY 3rd phase will involve consolidation of 1.25 lakh km existing rural roads connecting villages to rural agricultural markets, higher secondary schools and hospitals. The plastic waste collected will also be used during work on these roads under PMGSY third phase.

Construction of bridges of upto 150 m in plain areas and 200 m in Himalayan and north eastern states are proposed under the PM Gram Sadak Yojana Phase 3. This is against the existing provisions of 75 m in plain areas and 100 m in Himalayan and north eastern states. States would enter into Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) before launching PMGSY third phase to provide adequate funds for maintenance of roads in the five-year period after construction.

PMGSY III will facilitate easy and faster movement to and from agricultural markets, schools and hospitals. This phase will also involve an estimated cost of Rs. 80,250 crore, which would be shared in the ratio of 60:40 between the Centre and states. In case of the 8 north-eastern and 3 Himalayan states, the ratio of funds will be 90:10.

Background

PM Gram Sadak Yojana was launched in December 2000 with an objective to provide single all-weather road connectivity to eligible unconnected habitation. This includes designated population size of more than 500 in plain areas and 250 in north-east, hill, tribal and desert areas as per census of 2001.
