Odisha Mo College Campaign 2021
Odisha government has launched ‘Mo College’ campaign for holistic development of colleges across the state on 21 March 2021. The campaign is built on the lines of ‘Mo School Abhiyan’, a scheme for development of schools that is driven by alumni involvement and contributions. The main aim of Mo College Campaign is to connect the memories of the alumni with their colleges. The state government will make a decent budgetary provision to spread the campaign. All the active participants will make a part in the development journey.
Launch of Mo College Portal by CM Naveen Patnaik
CM Patnaik mentioned, “I am delighted to launch the “Mo College” campaign and web portal today. The portal will be a great enabler in connecting the alumina across the country and around the globe to the campaign.” “After the success of ‘Mo School’ campaign, I believe ‘Mo College’ is going to bring similar response for higher education, institutions in the state. It aims to design an emotionally invested platform connecting the Odia alumina thus across the globe as there is nothing more rewarding than going back to treasured memories of our colleges”.
Mo College Abhiyan is not only limited to the alumni rather the non-alumni, philanthropists, charitable organizations, groups of persons and institutions can also be part of this innovative initiative. The mission of “Mo College” abhiyan aims to strive for a healthy learning atmosphere which is grounded on the principles of nation-building, promoting creativity, skill development and nurturing teamwork, thereby making the colleges and universities an innovative and exciting place to study.
Action Plan for Odisha Mo College Campaign
The Higher Education department has worked out a detailed action plan to create a platform where alumni of institutes can connect and contribute for the development of their alma mater. The department has also decided to pick 100 mentors who will pledge their association with the campaign on the inaugural day. The proposed Mo College Campaign will be started for development of colleges with the help of their alumni.
Through Mo College Campaign, people would realize the joy of giving back to our respective Alma Maters where we enjoyed the most vibrant period of our youth and shaped our future. I appeal to all my brothers and sisters of Odisha to take this opportunity to become a collaborative force in building up of our own institutions.
The State government is taking many steps in enhancing the structure and functioning of higher education system in Odisha. Nevertheless, your personal contribution will give a magical touch to it. The benefit of the program will spread across 755 government colleges and Universities. CM mentioned “It is my pleasure to announce that in case of financial collaboration the state government will contribute double the amount contributed by the alumni with a cap of Rs 50 lakh per institution per year”.
Alumni Registration at Mo College Campaign Portal
A Mo College Society has been formed to monitor the campaign. The department is also developing digital platform for registration of alumni. At the Mo College Campaign Portal, alumni registration must be done to participate in this abhiyan.
Setting Up of New Degree Colleges in Odisha
The previous Mo School campaign provides a platform for former students to connect with their childhood memories and be a part of the change they want to see in their schools. The state government is committed to development of higher education. Accordingly, the state govt. of Odisha will setup 6 new degree colleges at Balangir, Kalahandi, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Koraput and Gajapati districts under Rashtriya Uchchatar Siksha Abhiyan (RUSA). Till date, there are 52 government degree colleges and eight model colleges in Odisha.
Delay in Roll Out of Mo College Initiative
After the launch of Mo School Abhiyan in 2016, the government had decided to roll out Mo College initiative last year i.e 2020. However, the outbreak of Covid-19 delayed its implementation. As per the modalities, the “Mo College” initiative will have a corpus fund of Rs 20 crore for development of colleges. Funds will be managed from two sources, contribution from donors and the government allocation.
Implementation of Odisha Mo College Campaign
Former students of colleges and individuals will be encouraged to contribute while the government will release twice the amount of their contribution to the institution concerned for its development. There, however, will be an upper cap of Rs 50 lakh on contribution of the government for a college in a year. Activities such as motivational programmes, value-based education and career counselling will also be undertaken under the initiative.
Improvement in Overall Quality of Education
Odisha govt. has taken various steps to fill up vacancies of teaching in staff in colleges. The students in Odisha are more inclined towards private colleges owing to large-scale vacancies in teaching staff and lack of infrastructure in government colleges. The main focus of the state govt. is on improving the overall quality of teaching.
Moreover, govt. will lay stress on the need of reorientation in teaching of history. Now the local heroes like Rana Pratap Singh would be given more importance over outsiders like Babar and Akbar. The state govt. has also decided that Sambalpur University must be trifurcated with two more universities at Bhawanipatna and Balangir.
